About Monmouth & Independence Minimize

City of Monmouth
Monmouth, located in the lush Willamette Valley, has a population of 9,125 residents and has been designated as a Tree City USA.

Monmouth has its own electric distribution system and Monmouth’s educational opportunities rank as one of the highest in the state. Monmouth is home to Western Oregon University (which was established in 1856) a 4-year institution of higher education, offering a variety of degree programs to more than 4,900 students.

Founded in 1845 by pioneers who migrated from Independence, Missouri, the city is known for its traditional values and neighborly residents. With a population of 7,715, Independence maintains a small town feel, while offering ‘big city’ amenities.

Our Towns working together
High-speed internet access, along with digital cable and internet telephone service is now available to both Independence and Monmouth, with the formation of MINET. MINET was formed by an intergovernmental agreement between the two cities in order to provide fiber optic broadband services to both communities. It is a one-of-a-kind project in the west, and one of only a handful of similar projects nationwide.

Location
Monmouth and Independence are located about 20 minutes from Salem, the state capital. The Oregon coast is less than a half hour away; skiing is about 2 hours drive, an hours drive away is Portland, Cascade Mountains and Pacific Coastline
